| | This is on top of the 360 redundancies announced at the Monkstown plant earlier this year.
The reduction is part of 10,000 jobs being shed by the Canadian headquartered company globally between June and September and on top of 20,000 job losses announced earlier in the year.
Together the cuts will see the company reduce employment by almost a third from 94,000.
Nortel said the continuing worldwide downturn in the demand for communications equipment means that it has no option but to make the further cuts.
Monkstown is the only part of Nortel in the UK affected by today's announcement and means that the workforce there will have been cut from 2,400 at the beginning of the year to 1,600 by September.
The systems house area of operations will be hit by the latest cuts, said a spokesman for Nortel at Monkstown.
He said they were entering a consultation process with representatives of the workforce and would ''attempt to keep redundancies to a minimum'' |
